terribly deformed right front leg - AFTER SURGERY! 7/8/01

First email received from Maria Burns was June 15, 2001

I picked up a male Rott from the HCC who had a trauma to his right front leg and now it is turned almost backward. The Radius bone stopped growing. He is probably three and is either going to need surgery or amputation! Vet sent the x-rays to OSU and we should know soon what is to be done.

and on the 15th Grace replied to Maria
Good luck on that boy.  Maybe you should contact veterinary schools in your area and introduce yourself as a member of the club doing rescue.  Schools like to help and the same time, it is a teaching tool for students.  Do you have any schools near you, in your state or adjacent states?  It is worth a try.

and her reply to Grace was
Good idea, the place where they sent the x-rays is a school. Ohio State Veterinary College.

Chance goes to OSU on Monday. I went to the local paper and they are doing a big story on him. OSU thinks he may need two surgeries to save his right front leg. I will be posting to the club list after we find out what is to be done and how much it will cost. I know I will need help financially with this one but what am I to do? Bob says just Try. Do you think any of the other rescue sites would be willing to help? Two surgeries are a lot of money. Also will ask OSU if they can help in any way. Will post pictures when we can. Any input is helpful

READ CHANCE'S STORY ...

Chance came to me on June 4, 2001.
The Humane Care Center called and said he was to be put down that day!
I went and took him immediately to be neutered and all shots plus heartworm check.

Also x-rays on  his terribly deformed right front leg. He was referred to OSU Veterinary College and today we took him. Evidentially he had trauma to his elbow as a puppy and the Radius did not grow and the inside bone did keep growing, as a result he is almost walking on his leg at a backward angle. He will have surgery tomorrow which will correct this. They will go in and break his bones right above his ankle and turn his foot around. If this is not done he will be in too much pain, and he is already suffering from from arthritis in his elbow.

It is all rather complicated, but he is in the hands of a very good specialist. He is between 2 and 3 years old and soooooo sweet.

Here is where we need help. The surgery will cost between $1300 and $1500. For this type of surgery I feel we are getting a very fair price.

I will updated you tomorrow on how the surgery went.
Please, please help, Thank you all, Maria

Marie Zeak has been kind enough to donate #20 of dehydrated hot dogs worth $100 for a raffle for Chance. Tickets are $25 for one or $50 for three. All money will go for Chance's surgery bills. Drawing will be on July 28 and Marie will notify us of the winner.

Dear Members,
Has anyone ever known a dog that did not like the dehydrated hot dogs?
I am putting together a gift basket filled with 20 pounds (dehydrated weight will be around 10 pounds)  Good quality dogs, all chicken, with a tad of garlic powder sprinkled on prior to the dehydration process.  Maria Burns has informed the membership of the "raffle".  I will take a photo of the gift basket for everyone to see, as soon as the hot dogs are processed.

I will mail each person that donates funds raffle ticket stubs.  The duplicate with your name on it will be placed in "Chance's Jar".  On July 28, a non-member of GRC will draw the winning ticket.  I will have Tony standing by with a camera to take the photo of the drawing.  The winner will be notified that day, and the basket will be shipped.

We need to raise at least $1,500 for Maria's "Chance", and with your support, WE CAN DO IT !!!  If you are on any lists, please post the raffle information, as we need all of the help that we can get.  I state: "Maria's Chance" as this one will walk again on 4 legs.  There was another "Chance", this one was "Grace's Chance".  Her "Chance" was also saved on the "final day", yet his leg could not be saved.  And, you know what happened to "Grace's Chance".  His name was changed, and on 3 legs, he became "Atlantis Aijo Acosta, TT,CGC,RTD"..still he will forever be "Chance" in the world of Grace Acosta , she named him that for another "Chance" in life.  He is pictured at the GRC Website http://gulfstreamrottweilerclub.org/rescue.htm
Maria's "Chance" deserves just that too.  And, from my "Chance" I thank each and every one for your donations.  He is a beautiful boy, and I cannot thank Maria Burns enough for going the distance!

Donations of $100.00 or more, will not only receive the raffle chances, but I will ship a hand-painted Rottweiler canvas tote bag.  What to remain anonymous, no problem.  Only Maria and I will know who contributed.    Thank you all,Marie Zeak

Lisa is Chance's Vet-tech at OSU she calls every morning and every evening. Today he is doing much better, there is swelling in his foot and they have put a bandage on it to stop the swelling. His temp is good and he is having no problem with bladder. He does have on an e-collar, would not quit licking foot. They have him in a stabilizing Brace and he will come home in it. If all goes will he will be back with me on Tues, he could come home on Friday, but I have a three day dog show. OSU is not going to charge me for boarding him the extra days. He has really gotten to the hearts of a lot of vet-tech's as well as Dr and Staff. They all know he is a rescue and needs a home. They are also busy trying to find him a home. It makes you have Faith in people. Will post tomorrow.
Thanks for all donations.

A young couple decided to buy a Rottweiler and like most people, they bought from a backyard breeder. They chose the little boy who shoved every other puppy out of the way to get to the food bowl. The couple lived in a house in the country which they rented.  The man taught the pup well, no biting, and he socialized the pup, knowing that a Rottweiler needs to be around people and learn to be a good dog. The puppy went everywhere the man went, hiking, camping long rides in the seat of his truck. All was well and the puppy was happy. After two years and nine months, the man that rented the house to the young couple, changed insurance companies and the new insurance company would not allow Rottweilers. The Wicked insurance man came and checked the houses and told the young couple the dog must go. The young couple at first kept the dog hoping the insurance company would change their mind. Finally it was told to them to get rid of the dog or move, so they put an ad in the local paper, and after many interviews took the dog to a couple with a new baby. The young man left the dog with the new owners, and would return to visit the dog, but each time he went the dog became more excited until finally they had to drag him into the house and away from his dad. The young man decided not to go visit any more as it was to hard on the dog and himself. He would call and ask how the dog was, and the new owners would tell him what the dog was doing. At night when the baby would cry the new owners would hear the dog on the baby monitor. He would go in check on the baby and sleep in the baby's room. One day when the new owners were gone, the dog knocked a fan out of a window and headed home. He did not know that the young couple had bought a house and no longer lived in the one they had rented when they had the dog. After a long journey of two weeks, the dog was only ten minutes from home when he was picked up by the dog warden and taken to the dog pound. On his third day he was to be put down. All he was guilty of doing was trying to get back to the man he loved. Who was this dog? Chance, yes our chance with the bad leg. After being in the paper the man called and wanted to know if he could see the dog as it sounded like his. He came and I cannot tell you how happy Chance was to see his dad. The man had no idea Chance was missing, and when he saw the story in the paper he called the new owners and yes he was gone. He called me and came to see Chance. He now comes every other day and Chance is at the point where he does not want him to leave. This dog truly, truly loves this man. He told me Chance was hit by a truck when he was a puppy and was rushed to the Vet. He had a smashed Femur head which they removed and were told to wait for the front leg to grow and it would be all right. He is so grateful for what all of us have done for Chance and will be adopting him when he is healed. I have a contract that calls for fenced in yard, and they are in the process of putting one up. We called the dog pound to see where Chance was picked up and it is only ten minutes from where the use to live. Had he been there and found no one home? I love this dog and I know I am doing the right thing by letting his former owner have him back. He is donating money for the surgery and he and his wife will be helping at the dog wash. He knows that Chance cannot leave here until all surgeries are done and he is healthy, but he is willing to wait, he truly loves this dog and the dog loves him. By the way his name is Deeters. I still call him Chance.

Good news on Sept 10 Chance will have all of his stabilzer removed. All looks well and the Vets think his elbow will correct itself without surgery. He is now home with his dad and is more spoiled than ever. Thanks to all.    Maria Burns

Maria writes: "IT IS TRULY AMAZING TO ME HOW FAR THE MIRACLE OF ONE DOG GOES..

Wonderful new here. After reading the two articles in the paper about Chance and how he was to be put down only because Sonny Swinehart the Dog Warden does not like Rottweilers, Sonny has now taken a leave of absence and City Council is in the process of buying out his contract. Shelly Roberts who is the person who called me on Chance and other Rotts is now in charge and has adopted out every single Rott that has come in the HCC. I am so happy, only one snag, Shelly has no authority to say if they are purebred and because of this she cannot have the altered or spayed. All purebred animals at our pound must be fixed. We are now working on this. It is truly amazing to me how far the Miracle of one dog goes. Have a really good Labor Day and drive safe.
